How to Choose the Right Wire Rope?

Choosing the right wire rope doesn't have to be complicated. Follow this clear guide to get reliable performance and safety for your equipment.

1. Rope Strength

Calculate the maximum working load, including weight, shock loads, speed, acceleration, and friction. Use a proper design factor to find the required minimum breaking load. Always refer to standards or product data for accurate values.

2. Bending Fatigue

Ropes bending around sheaves or drums suffer bending fatigue. Reverse bending and high speed make it worse. Choose ropes with high bending fatigue resistance for these conditions.

3. Abrasion Resistance

Abrasion wears outer and inner wires. For abrasive environments, select a rope with large outer wires to extend service life.

4. Vibration & Corrosion

Vibration can cause hidden internal breaks.In corrosive environments, use galvanized wire rope or maintain regular lubrication.

5. Avoid Distortion

Poor groove sizing or multi-layer spooling can distort ropes. Steel core ropes offer better resistance to crushing and distortion.

6. Anti-Rotation & Stability

For high-lift applications, use rotation-resistant ropes to prevent twisting and cabling. Make sure high-rotation ropes are properly secured at both ends.

7. Matching & Installation

When connecting two ropes, use the same type and lay direction.Pay attention to rope length and elongation under load.Handle non-preformed and rotation-resistant ropes carefully during installation.

8. Operating Temperature

Use steel core ropes above 180°F.Reduce working load limits at high temperatures.Avoid high-carbon wire ropes over 800°F.Respect temperature limits for end terminations and lubricants.
